Across the world , 120 countries are hosting the World's Biggest Lesson of 30 minutes on 23rd April to create awareness about education for all. Ashoka Universal School hosted the event at their Wadala premises in front of a gathering of 750 registrants who had come to be a part of this event. The event started in the morning with the introduction that in the world there are 73 million children who do not go to schools , 750 million adults who are illiterate and more than half of these are females. This 750 million illiterates is more than entire population of USA, Russia,Brazil, South Africa, Australia, South Korea and Saudi Arabia put together. The proceedings were kicked off with the speech of the director of YCMOU,Dr.Ramesh Warkhade who spoke in three languages to make a point that such awareness campaigns as started by Kofi Annan, then Secretary General of the UN, were the backbone of the social framework of the society. Mr. Satish Parakh, Secretary of Ashoka Education Foundation welcomed all the participants and dignitaries. The World's Biggest Lesson was conducted by Dr.Jawahar Surisetti,psychologist and educationist, who heads the Religion of Youth. He first introduced the world record event in an interactive session with the children, parents and teachers. He then went to talk about the Campaign for Education, quality education, awareness of the extent of illiteracy, reasons for this, the gender bias, importance and consequences of good education and he also presented trivia on the figures of the present situation and the future course of action till 2015. He also narrated his experiences in Jammu and Kashmir in the conflict zones in the project undertaken to educated the war stricken children with the help of mobile vans.To conclude he asked questions from the audience to check the awareness. The participants started pouring in the morning and filled up the forms, signed them and sat for the event to begin. There were enthusiastic children, parents and teachers and not to be missed students from Adhaarashram who listened in rapt attention. The futuristic vote of thanks was presented by Shri Shrikant Shukla, the Jt.Secretary of the Foundation and the dignitaries present included Mr.Sanjay Londhe,Mr.Narendra Shakadwipi, Mr.Prashant Patil,Dr.Walke,Mr.Sunil Chandak, Prof.Bhagwat,Dr.Nilesh Berad and Prof.B.D.Pagar.
